It’s 2019 when I know there’s a piece I need to make.
I reach out to Ethie, my MFA voice teacher, turned-mentor-turned-friend. It’s been ten years since we last worked together in a studio. I don’t know much about what I want to make, but I do know that I need to make something and my instinct tells me to start with my voice.
Ethie invites me to join a weekend voice workshop in New York City that she co-facilitates with Gary Grundei, another former MFA teacher. Gary accompanies on piano. Inside our structured improvisation I feel boundless.
